Travel to Mayotte > Medical Facilities
Mamoudzou is the only town where a hospital can be found though an annex was opened in Dzaoudzi on Petite Terre. "Inter-communal" maternities were installed in Mramadoudou in the south of the island in 2005 and in the Kahani commune of Ouangani at the centre in 2006.
The maternity of Dzoumogne in the north is being built by SMTPC, a subsidiary of the VINCI society. However, the highest birth rate is in Mamoudzou: 54% of births per year in 2003 and 57,3% in 2004. Since the 1 st of April 2005 medical care is charged except if patients show their social security card or pay an allocation to the public care sector or fees to a private doctor.
There are also dispensaries in the villages but doctors are scarce. However, since 2005, nurses have liberalized their profession and take care of patients at home.
