About Seychelles > People and Culture

With 83 000 inhabitants, the Seychelles are one of the least populated country in the world. The demographic growth is increasing slightly. However it is a 'young country'; indeed half of the population is less than 25 years old. Two- thirds of this population lives in Mahe, the largest island of the archipelago, and life expectancy is about 72 years. The population consists of various origins (Africans, Indians, Asians and Europeans). Everyone lives in harmony, animated by a deep national feeling. The people's way of life is peaceful, nonchalant and highly religious; 90% of the population is Catholics and a minority is either Protestant or Muslim or Hindu. Moreover they are welcoming, smiling and enjoy partying.

Singing and dancing are part of their life and culture: 'sega', 'moutia' (African dance with Tam-Tam music), 'kamtole' (mix of polka and waltz danced with the music of violins and accordions.). They are also passionately interested in football, athletism, boxing and volley-ball.
